A focus+context technique based on hyperbolic geometry for visualizing large hierarchies

Abstract: We present a new focus+context (fisheye) technique for visualizing and manipulating large hierarchies. Our technique assigns more display space to a portion of the hierarchy while still embedding it in the context of the entire hierarchy. The essence of this scheme is to lay out the hierarchy in a uniform way on a hyperbolic plane and map this plane onto a circular display region. This supports a smooth blending between focus and context, as well as continuous redirection of the focus. We have developed effect… Show more

“…These employ strategies to make large, complex trees easier to interpret, e.g. specialized zoom techniques [2][3][4] and layout algorithms [5,6]. This work has led to a variety of innovative designs and strategies for presenting the most important information to users and hiding unneeded information, while simultaneously maintaining a sense of location and context within the tree, such as the SpaceTree [7].…”

“…To remedy the inefficient use of space, hyperbolic tree viewer [15] places the hierarchy on a hyperbolic plane, and then maps the plane onto a circular region. User's focus on the tree will be given more space, accentuating the structures around it.…”

“…Distortion gives more room to designated points of interest and decreases the space given to those objects away from these points. Some techniques have been designed to work with a single focus, such as the hyperbolic lens [10]. Others allow for multiple foci to be simultaneously expanded [12].…”
