A food systems approach and qualitative system dynamics model to reveal policy issues within the commercial broiler chicken system in South Africa

Abstract: Global broiler production and consumption levels continue to rise. South Africa’s broiler system is dominated by commercial production and formal retail trade, with competition from cheap imports. Local broiler policies have narrow, production-driven, short-term aims for industry growth and national food security. However, these have unintended consequences that undermine the system’s future sustainability. Using a food systems approach, this study developed a qualitative system dynamics model of the South Afr… Show more

“…Creating feedback loops provides information on a strategy’s performance and potential consequences in the system dynamics method [ 76 , 77 ]. The conclusion drawn from the causal loop diagram’s positive and negative loops is that changes in one element in a cycle may be identified as having an impact on another factor, leading to a greater knowledge of the system’s performance and feedback.…”

“…Second, the study analyzes policy documents, strategic plans, and program reports related to climate change adaptation, food safety regulations, nutrition initiatives, and public health interventions in Africa, following Queenan et al (2022) and Nordhagen et al (2022), to identify existing policy frameworks, institutional arrangements, implementation strategies, and food safety challenges as the well as areas for improvement. Third, the study analyzes selected case studies from different African countries that exemplify successful integration of climate change considerations into food safety, nutrition, and health policies and programs (Aworh, 2021; McCann et al, 2023; Queenan et al, 2022). This is important to highlight innovative approaches, best practices, and lessons learned that can inform policy development and implementation in this context.…”

“…K. Queenan et al (2022) noted that the use of developed and implemented probiotics in the field of broiler chickens is caused by the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Therefore, in broiler production, it is necessary to implement food safety and quality control systems for broiler chickens, including traceability systems and hazard analysis systems at critical control points, and to consider the health of the bird, quality feeding, and environmental sustainability.…”
