A Formal Framework for Modelling Coercion Resistance and Receipt Freeness

Abstract: Abstract-Coercion resistance and receipt freeness are critical properties for any voting system. However, many definitions of these properties have been proposed, with varying levels of formality, and there has been little attempt to tie these definitions together or identify relations between them.We give here a general framework for specifying different coercion resistance and receipt freeness properties using the process algebra CSP. The framework is general enough to accommodate a wide range of definitions… Show more

“…FDR furthermore cannot verify non-interactive zero knowledge proofs unlike ProVerif. Similarly, a typical voting system requirement, coercionresistance, can be defined in CSP [15], but FDR does not support its mechanical verification. ProVerif can verify this property but we did not make it a focus of our verification efforts.…”

“…Similarly, the symbolic definition of receipt-freeness in [26] also requires the voter to adopt a strategy to fool the adversary. Other definitions in symbolic models aim at characterizing the notion of a receipt [14,33,36] but (as usual in symbolic models) they are much more abstract than standard computational models.…”

“…[7] provided formal definitions of various privacy notions in applied pi calculus, and showed how they are related to each other. Finally, [10] used CSP to fit a wide range of definitions and properties given in the literature for coercion-resistance.…”
