A fractal model of tensile fracture surfaces for particulate‐filled polymer composites

Abstract: Tensile mechanical properties are important for the characterization of the utilization performances of materials. Inorganic particles are usually used to reinforce and toughen resins and to reduce costs in the polymer industry. It is, therefore, very important to quantitatively appraise the break way and mechanisms and the reinforcing or toughening effect of the fracture surface of tensile specimens. A tensile fracture surface fractal model of particulate-filled polymer composites on the basis of fractal theo… Show more

“…Fillers are also used to improve the working properties of thermoplastics, such as thermostability, rigidity, and hardness, although sometimes it may lead to some sacrifice in physical properties [17][18][19][20]. However, these sacrifices can be minimized by surface modification.…”

“…Recently, diatomite is used extensively more and more in sound materials, construct materials and heat insulation materials [9,10]. More recently, the authors [11] researched the tensile properties of glass bead-filled low density polyethylene composites, and proposed fractal model of tensile fracture surfaces for particulate-filled polymer composites. However, there have been few studies on the impact fracture toughness and its mechanisms of diatomite-filled polymer composites.…”

“…The parameters mentioned above had shortcomings of themselves. For example, the quantitative parameters can not evaluate the objective characteristics of the morphology of the fracture surface of the material, the number of the traditional statistic parameters and the roughness indexes of the fracture surface is too large and they are unstable [3].…”

For example, the quantitative parameters can not evaluate the objective characteristics of the morphology of the fracture surface of the material, the number of the traditional statistic parameters and the roughness indexes of the fracture surface is too large and they are unstable [3].The fractal theory was founded at the end of the 70s and early 80s in last century by Mandelbrot. The theory can be used to observe the fine structure hidden in the confused phenomena by using the similarity principle.…”
