A framework architecture for supervision and control systems

Abstract: The goal of this paper is to present a framework architecture supporting the development of Supervision and Control systems on top of CORBA. We describe a collection of such frameworks as suitable CORBA domains. We designed it and we are currently implementing it within a joint european project. We also defined a complete development method exploiting the architecture and we are developing a few prototype applications.

“…In particular, we mention the function block concept [36], the Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS) framework for satellite systems [37], the real-time framework for robotics and automation [13], NEXUS for robotics [38] and OSACA for automation [39]. Other approaches include the work reported in [40,41] on context aware applications, [42,43] on supervision and control, [44] for Web-based environments, [45] for extensible middleware platforms and [46] for real-time data collection and analysis. Our work differs from these previous works in the types of applications that are targeted in each case or in the fact that some of them do not adhere to component-based principles and thus do not offer the reusability found in our framework.…”

“…Throughout our past research, we have dealt heavily with temporal logic specifications and their application to industrial, criti-cal real-time systems [31,28,8,7]. In particular, our experience has been based on the TRIO language [19].…”

“…Thus, the designer has to define (and implement) the Application Objects that will communicate among each other and with Services, Domains, and Facilities, through the ORB. In this paper we exploit mainly CORBAServices, while a description of the frameworks identified for SCS can be found in [12].…”
