A Framework for Concern-Sensitive, Client-Side Adaptation

Abstract: Currently the Web is a platform for performing complex tasks which involve dealing with different Web applications. However, users still have to face these tasks in a handcrafted way. While building "opportunistic" servicebased software, such as mashups, can be a solution for combining data and information from different providers, many times this approach might have limitations. In this paper we present a novel approach which combines concernsensitive application adaptation with user-collected data to improve… Show more

“…Our parser was conceived to modify the structure of original Web forms using a client-side Web adaptation technique [10]. When the parser detects a Microformat in a Web page, the corresponding fields are highlighted using a blue box (see zone  at Figure 4); other fields are presented without change (e.g.…”

“…6. It was built upon the concept of Web augmentation [4], which defines strategies for implementing tools that can extend the set of elementary tasks users can do while navigating on the Web. Whilst the full details about the implementation of that framework are out of the scope of this paper, it is interesting to notice that it includes a client-side module and a broker at the server-side.…”

“…Once the broker replies, this module modifies the current Web page to display the search results as a kind of contextual help. For that, the DOM structure of the current Web page is adapted using a set of JavaScript functions, called augmenters [4]. As demonstrated in a previous work [25], adaptations created by augmenters are volatile and do not affect the application running in the Web server.…”
