A Framework for Mixed Reality Free-Choice, Self-Determined Learning

Abstract: In this article, we present a theoretical framework for mixed reality (MR/XR) self-determined learning to enhance ecological literacy in free-choice educational settings. The framework emerged from a research study in New Zealand which aimed to explore how learning experiences which incorporate mobile technologies within free-choice learning settings can be designed to enhance learner development of marine ecological literacy. An understanding of how mobile technology can be integrated into the teaching and le… Show more

“…State-of-the-art virtual solutions make it possible to create virtual museums and VR/AR experiences, as well as to provide people with a variety of information to enhance the museum's message and empower knowledge and awareness [20]. The important place in learning takes different kind of mobile learning, which is platform-independent, utilizes web-based platforms and incorporate in learning mobile applications to support learning anywhere and anytime, to move beyond static content delivery [21]. Educational researchers use different terms to name the learning through mobile devices, but the most appropriate term for the learning in virtual museums which tends to blur the borders between real space and virtual space seems 'authentic mobile learning' introduced by Burden and Kearney [22].…”

“…A framework for mixed reality free-choice self-determined learning Aguayo, Eames and Cochrane (2020) in their article explore MMR as a platform for enabling self-determined learning to enhance ecological literacy in free-choice educational settings, such as museums and visitor centres. They too used a design-based research approach to design and develop an MMR-based learning intervention to facilitate student-determined learning for enhancing ecological literacy.…”

“…Used alone, digital data collection simply substitutes analogue pen and paper data entry (Laurillard, 2012) and may not provide additional educational value. In contrast, mobile data collection that is incorporated into a learning ecosystem with other tools can enable collaboration and communication (Burt et al, 2019) as well as the transformative student experiences required to tackle authentic problems (Lozano et al, 2017;Aguayo et al, 2020). When applied within place-based courses in environmental science and sustainability, these tools have the potential to enhance the development of transferable skills whilst fostering improved environmental literacy and leadership (Burt et al, 2019).…”
