Each summer in Australia, bushfires burn many hectares of forest, causing deaths, injuries, and destroying property. Agent-based simulation is a powerful tool to test various management strategies on a simulated population, and to raise awareness of the actual population behaviour. But valid results depend on realistic underlying models. This article describes two simulations of the Australian population's behaviour during bushfires designed in previous work, one based on a finite-state machine architecture, the other based on a belief-desire-intention agent architecture. It then proposes several contributions towards more realistic agent-based models of human behaviour: a methodology and tool for easily designing BDI models; a number of objective and subjective criteria for comparing agent-based models; a comparison of our two models along these criteria, showing that BDI provides better explanability and understandability of behaviour, makes models easier to extend, and is therefore best adapted; and a discussion of possible extensions of BDI models to further improve their realism.

Recently, the US Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration and other international organizations have proposed a set of requirements for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to operate for nonrecreational purposes. However, existing UAV architectures fulfill only some of the established requirements, and not all in one solution. This article presents an event-driven serviceoriented architecture that allows autonomous UAVs to satisfy all these requirements and to detect critical situations, performing real-time decision making.

Engagement-level simulation is a quantitative way to evaluate the effectiveness of weapon systems before construction and acquisition, minimizing the risk of investment. Though contractors have built simulation systems with high fidelity models of weapon systems and battlefields, developing competent tactics to give full play to new weapon systems in simulation experiments is labor intensive, as most classical tactics tend to be out of date. In this work, we proposed a tactics exploration framework (TEF) that applied grammar-based genetic programming (GP) to generating and evolving tactics in the engagementlevel simulation. Tactics are represented with modular behavior trees (BTs) for compatibility with the genetic operators. Experiments to explore submarine tactics have been conducted to observe and study the exploration process. The experimental results show that the TEF based on GP is efficient to explore tactics in the formalism of BTs.
