A fully distributed algorithm for pilot power control in LTE femtocell networks

Abstract: In this paper, we present an improved selfconfiguration algorithm for LTE femtocells. In the absence of active users, femtocell resides in an energy saving state. As traffic demand becomes considerable, each Femto Base Station dynamically adapts its pilot power (and thus the coverage) to the on-site traffic demand. Our approach improves the overall system capacity and controls co-channel interference while enhancing Energy Efficiency of the overall cellular network. The proposed power control scheme is fully d… Show more

“…20) and, consequently, more traffic is offloaded from the MBS (just when it is the most necessary). Applying (10) to the whole observation period, we have quantified the total amount of energy consumed by entire femtocell network during a working day: E FN;Static ¼ 2240:00 Wh and E FN;OurApproach ¼ 1871:84 Wh. It can be estimated that implementation of our algorithm in this case study results in an overall energy saving gain of 16.44%.…”

“…It aims at addressing both energy consumption reduction and femto-femto interference issues without requiring a leader or a central control unit, neither information exchange between the base stations of the network. In the proposed algorithm (an improved version of the one presented in [9,10]) we make use of radio measurements integrating in each FBS automatic and autonomous procedures of configuration and optimization of coverage according to the detected on-site user activity. The adaptive nature of the coverage algorithm allows to increase the capacity and the Energy Efficiency (EE) of the overall network.…”
