“…In the FTIR analysis of oxi-pectin (Fig. 4A), the peak at 1740 cm À1 , which shifted to lower wavenumbers and became narrower, might contain the contribution of the vibrational symmetric stretching of aldehydic groups, as discussed in previous works on other polyuronates [29][30][31][32] or glycosaminoglycans. 33 Other peak modifications, probably associated with the absorption of aliphatic aldehydes, were visible in the region between 1440 cm À1 and 1350 cm À1 and refer to in-plane C-H rocking.…”

“…The partial oxidation of HA catalyzed by a periodate (NaIO 4 ) introduces aldehyde groups in HA glucuronic acid, providing opportunities for cross-linking with small metabolizable molecules such as adipic dihydrazide (ADH) by click reaction [19][20][21][22][23]. First, studies have used HA/ADH hydrogels for nucleus pulposus regeneration [24][25][26].…”

“…The experiments with soil, in which periodate treatment alternates with reduction with NaBH,, provide evidence for the formation of hemiacetals from the partial oxidation products of some sugars and their nearest neighbours. This is known to occur with 1-4 xylans (Painter & Larsen, 1970) as well as other polymers (Painter & Larsen, 1973) and could explain the persistence of 1-4 Xyl to the extent observed. The 1-3 linked xylose would be expected to persist because of a lack of vicinal hydroxyl groups.…”
