A Game-Theoretic Analysis of Cyber Switching Attacks and Mitigation in Smart Grid Systems

Abstract: We propose a framework for the analysis of cyber switching attacks and control-based mitigation in cyber-enabled power systems. Our model of the switching attack is simple, only requiring knowledge of the sign of the local relative rotor speed, which may be estimated. The controller is modeled to be resource constrained, choosing to act only during select intervals of time. We make use of an iterated game-theoretic formulation to describe the interactions of the parties and its effect on system stability. Anal… Show more

“…In the smart-world systems (e.g., smart cities, smart grid, smart transportation), a number of efforts have been devoted to studying the impacts of cyber attacks as well as the development of defensive schemes [5,6,7,11,13,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,27,28,29,30,31,32]. For example, Ericsson et al [33] presented some important issues on the cyber security and information security in the energy-based cyber-physical systems.…”

“…Particularly, in an iterated game, the selfish behavior of participants can lead to a loss for both their opponents and themselves. There are a number of research efforts focused on the iterated game [25,38,60,61,62,63,64,65]. The iterated game problem has been considered to have no unilateral ultimate solution as the results of the game are jointly determined by all participants.…”

“…If attacks affect the stability of power systems, control strategies must be applied. A mitigation framework and control strategies of generators are proposed in [46] to maintain system stability with respect to switching attacks. In the study of [47], both cyber and physical mitigation steps are included.…”
