A general strategy for colloidal stable ultrasmall amorphous mineral clusters in organic solvents

Abstract: A general gas diffusion strategy using 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid as a ligand and ethanol as a solvent was developed to fabricate stable amorphous mineral clusters with a core size of less than 2 nm.

“…The high‐resolution TEM (HRTEM) image (inset of Figure a) of a‐Cu exhibits the amorphous nature, while the image of c‐Cu (inset of Figure b) reveals a lattice spacing of about 0.181 nm for c‐Cu, corresponding to (200) plane of Cu, which are well consistent with the XRD results. Moreover, the corresponding selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns prove the amorphous feature of a‐Cu with very ambiguous diffuse halo ring (Figure e), and the crystalline c‐Cu with very distinct rings (Figure f), agrees very well with their XRD results (Figure b).…”

“…In our work, the obtained Tafel slope for HCOOH of 111 mV dec −1 implies the initial single e − transfer step, which is illustrated by Equation , is the RDS of HCOOH for CO 2 reduction on a‐Cu. In the case of C 2 H 6 O production over a‐Cu, a slope of 216 mV dec −1 (Figure S8, Supporting Information) illustrates that, it shares the same RDS with HCOOH (Equation ) . The production steps of C 2 H 6 O share the same first two steps with HCOOH.…”

“…Firstly, certain additives capture clusters of atoms, molecules and ions, inhibiting further coalescence. This ‘divide and protect’ stabilization is illustrated by thiolate‐protected gold clusters as well as 10,12‐pentacosadiynoic acid protected mineral clusters ,,. Here the overall structure and energetics of nanoclusters are related to the chemical nature of the ligand and also the distinct arrangements of the core and the core‐shell interface (Figure a).…”
