A generative design case study for UAV-based assembly and fabrication: parametric analysis and synthesis of Iranian-Islamic Muqarnas

Abstract: PurposeThis study proposes a DfMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and uses Iranian-Islamic Muqarnas as the main case study due to their geometric modularity. In Islamic architecture, different geographic regions are known to have used various design and construction methods of “Muqarnas”, a type of decorated dome.Design/methodology/approachThe paper presents a study on parametric analysis of the Iranian-Islamic Muqarnas and analyses its components, geometric relatio… Show more

“…Albert et al [2] developed a new computational method that could possibly create pattern designs and compare patterns between different cultures. Similarly, Zamanigoldeh and Dounas [23] proposed a construction method using a digital strategy, UAV, which will help to create complex shapes. Thalil et al [24] analyzed patterns encountered in Western Moorish art and used CAD tools to construct new geometric patterns.…”

“…Hence, many industries, such as the automobile and aerospace industries, have implemented this approach in their processes [8]. The utilization of DfMA has been assessed in various studies focusing on diverse systems, such as the redesign of a ventilation unit [9], the prefabrication of non-structural building elements [7], the construction of a modular structure made of cross-laminated timber [10], the design of an Iranian-Islamic Muqarnas [11], and the development of a product data management system for selecting appropriate materials and welding processes [12]. Topics of DfMA-related studies range from the theoretical application of the design method in existing products through a case study [8,9,13] to its practical application in product development [10].…”
