This study aimed to determine genetic and morphometric characteristics of trout population in Terme Stream, a southern coastal Black Sea drainage. A total of 50 samples were used in morphometric studies and 29 traditional morphometric measurements were taken from all samples with a digital caliper. In addition to morphometric evaluations, mtDNA (cyt b and Control region), and nDNA (Gh2c1) markers were used in molecular studies, too. For molecular studies, DNA was extracted from caudal fin tissue of 10 samples. A total of 991 bp long consensus length of cyt b gene, 974 bp of Control Region and 538 bp of Gh2c1 were obtained (the accession numbers MW871594 for cyt b, MZ055401for Control Region, and MZ055402 for Gh2c1). However, Salmo species from the GenBank database, and also Salmo salar (LC012541-outgroup) were used in phylogenetic analyses. According to the results of this study, a new record, Salmo fahrettini, from Black Sea Region (Terme-Salıpazarı) were described with molecular and morphometric analysis.

Salmonid (Salmonidae) sympatric diversity is the co-occurrence, in a lake or river, of two or more reproductively isolated populations/subpopulations, or phenotypes resulting from phenotypic plasticity. Sympatric populations can arise through allopatric and/ or sympatric evolution. Subsequently, allopatric lineages can occur in sympatry due to independent colonisation and/or through anthropogenic introduction. Sympatric divergence is often driven by feeding opportunities, with populations segregating as planktivorous, benthivorous and piscivorous ecotypes ("trophic polymorphism"), and further segregation occurring by feeding depth and body size. Subpopulations evolve by natal homing where a water has two or more discrete spawning areas, often resulting in phenotypically and ecologically cryptic sympatry. Most known sympatric populations/phenotypes in trout of the genus Salmo (Eurasian trout aka brown trout) involve sympatric piscivorous (ferox) and lifetime invertivorous trout. Segregation on the benthic-limnetic axis has been poorly studied in Eurasian trout compared with other salmonids but is likely commoner than currently described. While three sympatric populations/species of Eurasian trout are recognised from Lake Ohrid (Albania/ North Macedonia), limited ecological information is available and there are only two lakes with three or four sympatric populations with described benthic, limnetic and piscivorous trophic segregation: Lough Melvin (Ireland) and Loch Laidon (Scotland), the latter having the only identified case of a sympatric profundal benthic feeding populations, possibly due to the absence of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) in the lake.Many thousands of waters are yet to be examined. Some sympatric populations are extinct, and others are vulnerable with conservation action being urgently required. This should ideally be based on populations/conservation units, but the lack of recognition of intraspecific units in most legislations in the native Eurasian trout range necessitates a pragmatic approach, with species classification, where appropriate, based on integrative taxonomy. Some sympatric populations clearly merit species status and should be formally classified as such if a valid previous name is not available.

Brown trout is a species complex (Salmo trutta complex, L., 1758) including both widespread invasive (non‐native hatchery strains) lineages and endangered local‐endemic lineages, among which is the Sardinian trout, the only native salmonid present in Sardinia. Multiple stressors (e.g. the spread of stocked brown trout of Atlantic origin, habitat alteration and climate change) combine to seriously threaten the persistence of wild native populations. In this study, the origin, population genetics and demography of wild Sardinian brown trout populations were extensively investigated. A total of 274 trout individuals collected from 12 hydro‐geographical basins were analysed using both mitochondrial (control region) and nuclear (LDH‐C1* locus and 10 microsatellites) markers. Although stocking activities have altered the native genetic makeup of some populations in the study area, several (almost) uncontaminated populations showing strong genetic structure were detected. Eroded intra‐population diversity, as well as small effective population size, sometimes associated with a bottleneck signal was also found. The genetic characteristics of Sardinian trout populations described in this study are probably due, at least partly, to the peculiarity of local environmental conditions at the margin of the ecological niche for salmonids. Based on the results of this study, the need for urgent measures of conservation aimed to ensure the near future viability of the last wild Sardinian trout populations was discussed.
