A girl with Takayasu arteritis associated with possible systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Takayasu arteritis is an inflammatory disease that affects the aorta and its main branches. Its etiology is obscure. Its association with systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported in the English literature in about 20 cases worldwide, and a relationship with a positive tuberculin test, either with or without tuberculosis, has also been mentioned. We report a pediatric patient who presented with renovascular hypertension secondary to Takayasu arteritis associated with a strongly positive tuberculin test an… Show more

“…The association of TA with perinuclear and cytoplasmic antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) also suggests a role of these autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of the disease [22]. Case reports describing the association of TA with rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, systemic lupus, Crohn disease, sarcoidosis and amyloidosis also emphasize the importance of immune mechanisms in the pathogenesis [23, 24]. …”

“…Our patient also has cerebrovascular risk factors (smoking and hypercholesterol) that may have accelerated arterial occlusion. A connection between Takayasu arteritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and antiphoshpolipid antibody syndrome has been hypothesized in previous cases [19,20].…”

“…7 Takayasu arteritis is related to other autoimmune disorders among which are juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Crohn's disease. 8 The association of pyoderma gangrenosum and Takayasu arteritis has rarely been reported in the Western literature, but is well known in the Japanese population. 9 Our patient presented initially with pyoderma gangrenosum and further investigations revealed the diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis.…”
