A glimpse to Laguna de los Cisnes, a field laboratory and natural monument in the Chilean Patagonia

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Laguna de los Cisnes (53°15'S) is a remote and unusual salty lagoon located in the Chilean Patagonia, declared natural monument to protect bird diversity in the area, which could also serve as a natural laboratory to monitor climate change. This study reports basic water, sediment and plankton characteristics observed during a summer (December) sampling, when the lagoon was hypersaline (51 g L ). The microalgae Spirogyra sp. and the micro-crustacean Artemia are predominating plankton. Results are dis… Show more

“…Los Cisnes lagoon is an area with diverse habitats (Fuentes-González & Gajardo, 2017). This wetland is formed by a lagoon with a long peninsula protruded into it and surrounded by several temporary shallow water bodies and muddy areas used as feeding places for charadriiforms such as White-rumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis , Baird’s Sandpiper C. bairdii , Two-banded Plover Charadrius falklandicus , Rufous-chested Plover C. modestus and the Magellanic Plover Pluvianellus socialis .…”

“…A high‐resolution (4800 × 3689) image of the LLC obtained from this same software formed the basis for identifying the different coastlines that characterize the geomorphology of the basin. These data were correlated with historical lake descriptions (Jory et al ., 1974; Cordero, 2007; Fuentes & Gajardo, 2017) and plotted using Adobe Illustrator (Version 24.3). To ascertain the elevation of successive coastlines relative to the height of algal–microbial buildups, topographic profiles along the basin flanks were acquired using Global Mapper software (Version 22.1; Blue Marble Geographics, USA) and relied on the ALOS World 3D – 30 m (AW3D30) global digital surface model.…”
