A global bibliometric and visualized analysis in the status and trends of corneal tissue engineering research from 1991 to 2021

Abstract: Corneal tissue engineering has developed rapidly in recent years, with a large number of publications emerging worldwide. This study focused on exploring the global status and research trends in this field. Publications related to corneal tissue engineering from 1991 to 2021 were acquired from the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-Expanded) of Web of Science (WoS). Firstly, the VOS viewer software was chosen for visualizing bibliometric networks, including bibliographic coupling analysis, co-citation analys… Show more

“…Tissue engineering has made significant strides, marked by notable developments in the isolation and culture of corneal endothelial cells, coupled with the production of biocompatible scaffolds, which have improved the prospects of tissue-engineered grafts. 45 As demonstrated in the bibliometric analysis, there has been continuous growth in publications related to corneal endothelial engineering over the past two decades, 6 which aligns with the data that indicate a decline in publications on penetrating keratoplasty. 46 However, challenges persist in translating this scientific progress to clinical application due to diverse factors, such as limited research time and financial constraints.…”

“…5 This is demonstrated by the growing trend in publications in the field in the last 20 years. 6 Although these developments hope to alleviate the current scarcity of corneal tissue for transplants, the pathway for adopting emergent technologies in clinical practice faces two "death valleys": the transition between academic research and technology transfer and then clinical practice adoption. 7,8 Several factors influence this, including a shortage of multidisciplinary approaches, lack of funding, and practices in the technology transfer process, leading to a gap between scientific advances and practical implementation.…”

“…Currently, the main alternative for the treatment of CED is EK from cadaveric donors. , However, due to the current shortage of donors and the high cost of the procedure, most patients are excluded from effective treatment. , In recent years, significant progress has been made in tissue engineering to construct feasible corneal tissue equivalents from the engineering of epithelium, stroma, and endothelium. In the field of tissue-engineered corneal endothelium, although there are more studies on therapies involving the injection of endothelial cells , or the construction of implants by combining endothelial cells with material carriers, , challenges remain regarding the long-term survival of endothelial cells in vivo and the high risk of immune rejection …”

“…Data including authors, article titles, sources, document types, keywords, abstract, and so on were extracted into Microsoft Excel 2019 for data processing and analysis. Relative research interest (RRI) is an index defined as the proportion of publication counts in a certain field to all-field publication counts every year 22 . The Hirsch index (H-index) was a bibliometric indicator of the scientific impact or academic productivity of individuals, meaning that a researcher has published h number of articles and each of them has been cited at least h times 23 .…”
