A global forum on ultramafic ecosystems: from ultramafic ecology to rehabilitation of degraded environments

Abstract: The 9th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology (ICSE) was held in Tirana and Pogradec (Albania) from June 5 to 9, 2017. More than 100 delegates from 29 countries around the world gathered to present their research on recent advances in: (i) ultramafic soils, (ii) biogeochemistry, (iii) diversity of ultramafic flora, microflora and fauna, (iv) ecophysiology of ultramafic-adapted organisms, (v) interactions between ultramafic organisms and their ecology, (vi) nature rehabilitation of degraded ultramafic … Show more

“…Serpentine soil is an edaphically stressful, low productivity soil type that typically hosts stunted vegetation along with a great degree of plant endemism (Brady et al, 2005; Echevarria et al, 2018; Rajakaruna & Boyd, 2014). Although there is considerable variation in the features of serpentine habitats, they are often characterized by shallow soil resulting in a reduced capacity to retain moisture (Brady et al, 2005; Kruckeberg, 2002).…”

“…The collective scientific expertise of participants in these conferences is broad, ranging from soil science to evolutionary ecology and conservation to applied agronomy. Each conference has been held in an ultramafic region with outstanding biodiversity: California, USA in 1991 (Baker et al, 1992), New Caledonia in 1995 (Jaffré et al, 1997), South Africa in 1999 (Balkwill, 2001), Cuba in 2003 (Boyd et al, 2004), Italy in 2006 (Chiarucci & Baker, 2007), Maine, USA and Québec, Canada in 2008 (Rajakaruna & Boyd, 2009), Portugal in 2011 (with five articles that appeared in the journal Plant Ecology and Diversity ), Malaysia in 2014 (van der Ent et al, 2015), and Albania in 2017 (Echevarria et al, 2018). The 10th ICSE was held in France on 12–16 June, 2023, 6 years after the previous edition, and hosted 126 delegates from 29 countries.…”

“…Interestingly, the soil diversity of ultramafic ecosystems immensely varies since it is located in a region with a wide environmental gradient in topography and rainfall (Minasny et al 2010;Siebecker et al 2017;Marescotti et al 2019). The high soil diversity also correlates with various growth performance of its vegetation since there is an interaction between soil characteristics and vegetation performance (Ibáñez et al 2014;van der Ent et al 2015;Echevarria et al 2018).…”
