A handbook of protocols for standardised and easy measurement of plant functional traits worldwide

Abstract: There is growing recognition that classifying terrestrial plant species on the basis of their function (into 'functional types') rather than their higher taxonomic identity, is a promising way forward for tackling important ecological questions at the scale of ecosystems, landscapes or biomes. These questions include those on vegetation responses to and vegetation effects on, environmental changes (e.g. changes in climate, atmospheric chemistry, land use or other disturbances). There is also growing consensus … Show more

“…Cinco indivíduos por espécie com alturas semelhantes foram selecionados. Em cada indivíduo 10 folhas expostas ao sol foram coletadas, colocadas em papéis toalha umedecidos e acondicionadas por duas horas em caixa térmica refrigerada por gelo (Cornelissen et al 2003). Conforme o protocolo proposto por Cornelissen et al (2003), as folhas foram reidratadas em câmara úmida por 6 à 8 horas, logo após, determinamos a massa fresca (MF; mg).…”

“…Then, we selected all species with at least one individual in each treatment to allow comparisons. In each individual of the species included in the analysis, we randomly tagged leaves from the third or fourth nodes, as long as the leaves were fully expanded and without obvious symptoms of herbivore or pathogen damage (Cornelissen et al, 2003).…”

“…The same leaves used for the determinations of leaf area were dried at 60 °C to a constant weight (72 h) (Cornelissen et al 2003) and weighed on an analytical balance to calculate total leaf dry mass per shoot. Shoot lengths were was measured with a millimeter ruler and their dry masses determined by drying at 60 °C for 72 h (Cornelissen et al 2003) and weighing, following the same procedures used for the leaves.…”
