A hardware in the loop facility for testing multisensor sense and avoid systems

Abstract: The Italian Aerospace Research Centre and the Department of Aerospace Engineering at University of Naples have been involved in a project for the development of an Obstacle Detection and Tracking suite for autonomous Collision Avoidance of Unmanned Aerial Systems. In this framework, a flight prototype of an autonomous Obstacle Detect Sense and Avoid system has been designed and realized. It is installed onboard a Very Light Aircraft named FLARE. The system is based on multiplesensor data integration and it inc… Show more

“…The image processing algorithm selection for the panchromatic camera has followed a detailed comparison of the main techniques listed in literature [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. It has aimed at evaluating the best algorithm in terms of computational load, detection range, false alarm and missed detection rates, and adaptability to various background brightness and illumination conditions.…”

“…(ii) search window binarization by means of the Sobel edge detection technique [18,20,21]; in order to limit the impact of background noise, a relatively high threshold has been considered in Sobel method, on the basis of the assumption that the intensity gradient generated by the intruder is larger than the other background objects; more details about threshold selection are discussed in the following;…”

“…2 However the imagery provided in these websites is not intended for research purposes and therefore many useful features are not available, e.g. Recent research on the use of synthetic images for analyzing and demonstrating the functionality of vision-based systems has been performed by Forlenza et al and Fasano et al [15,16], who developed a laboratory test system for Simulating a Sense and Avoid Flight System, using both real and synthetic imagery. Zsedrovits et al [17,18], used the flight simulation software FlightGear 3 to obtain synthetic flight imagery for which the intruder's size and 3D positions were known.…”
