Giving a formal semantic to an UML Activity diagram (UML AD) is a hard task. The reason of this difficulty is the ambiguity and the absence of a precise formal semantic of such semi-formal formalism. A variety of semantics exist in the literature having tackled the aspects covered by this language. We can give as example denotational, functional and compositional semantics. To cope with the recent tendency which gave a heterogeneous semantic to UML diagrams, we aim to define an algebraic presentation of the semantic of UML AD. In this work, we define a formal semantic of UML 2.0 AD based on institution theory. For UML AD formalism, which is a graphical language, no precise formal semantic is given to it. We use the institution theory to define the intended semantic. Thus, the UML AD formalism will be defined in its own natural semantic.

In this article, we define an approach for model transformation. We use the example of UML Activity Diagram (UML AD) and Event-B as a source and a target formalism. Before doing the transformation, a formal semantic is given to the source formalism. We use the institution theory to define the intended semantic. With this theory, we gain a algebraic specification for this formalism. Thus, the source formalism will be defined in its own natural semantic meaning without any intermediate semantic. Model transformation will be performed by a set of transformation schema which preserve the semantic expressed in the source model during the transformation process. The generated model expressed in Event-B language will be used for the formal verification of the source model. As a result, some model expressed in a precise formalism, the verification of this model can be seen as the verification of the Event-B model semantically equivalent to the source model. Then, in the present work we combine the institution theory, Event-Bmethod and graph grammar to develop an approach supporting the specification, the transformation and the verification of UML AD.

Making jointly a semi formal language and a formal language can be seen as the transformation of a semi formal model into a formal model. Thus, this task can be considered as a model transformation from an abstract model into another concrete one. In this context, the paper at hand comes up with an approach to model transformation from a UML Activity Diagram (UML AD) into the Event-B model. The approach will be fully detailed in the paper by putting the stress on its different steps. The issue of semantic preserving during the transformation process will also be discussed. The latter is performed after defining two local semantics for the UML AD and Event-B specification. The mathematical foundation of our approach is the institution theory. Such a theory establishes a new notion of algebraic semantic for the source and target formalisms. Additionally, with the institution morphisms, we define a semantic correctness and coherence of the model transformation.
