A High-Efficiency Second-Harmonic Gyrotron with a Depressed Collector

Abstract: The gyrotron with an electrically insulated collector has been manufactured and tested. The 60% output efficiency is obtained for the Collector Potential Depression (CPD) operation regime. The results of the numerical simulation of the electron energy spectrum in the collector region of the second-harmonic technological 24 GHz gyrotron are presented. It is shown, that the minimal electron beam energy is about 20% of the initial value and that the gyrotron cavity should be expanded to achieve the highest output… Show more

“…Although the latter approach is hindered by severe mode competition and significantly lower efficiency, there is remarkable progress in the development of gyrotrons operating at high harmonics. They include second-harmonic conventional gyrotrons (utilizing helical electron beams with off-axis orbits) [27][28][29][30][31][32] as well as tubes based on advanced concepts such as LOG (large-orbit gyrotrons with axis-encircling aka uniaxial electron beams) [33][34][35] and double-beam gyrotron [36]. The highest frequencies achieved by the gyrotrons have already passed the symbolic threshold value of 1 THz.…”

“…Reflected electrons can interact with high-frequency field, which, in principle, negatively affects the values of output power and electronic efficiency. Previous investigations show that the acceptable level of reflection from the collector can differ in different gyrotrons [5,[25][26][27] and ultimately be limited by 10 % [28].…”

“…При выполнении траекторного анализа ВЭП в коллекторной области исследовалась возможность достижения [5,[29][30][31][32], и достигать примерно 10% [33]. В разработанной схеме рекуператора с азимутальным магнитным полем радиальный дрейф приводит к осаждению основной части отраженных электронов на задней стенке секций коллектора, что заметно снижает поток частиц, возвращающихся в резонатор [19].…”
