A high-resolution GIS null model of potential forest expansion following land use changes in Norway

Abstract: During recent decades, forests have expanded into new areas throughout the whole of Norway. The processes explained as causing the forest expansion have focused mainly on climate or land use changes. To enable a spatially explicit separation of the effects following these two main drivers behind forest expansion, the authors set out to model the potential for natural forest regeneration following land use abandonment, given the present climatic conditions. The present forest distribution, a number of high-reso… Show more

“…Vegetation mapping is a descriptive process whereby the land surface is divided into partitions and each part is classified according to the composition and structure of the vegetation. Additionally, vegetation mapping is used as a tool in conservation planning (Ferrier 2002), natural resource management (Thackway et al 2007), documentation and monitoring of changes in nature Ihse 2007;Ståhl et al 2011), ecological modelling (Bryn et al 2013), and as a general data source for many research programmes (Peet & Roberts 2012).…”

“…In Scandinavia, land use has a pronounced effect on tree line positions (Moe 1979;Aas & Faarlund 1995;Hofgaard 1999;Bryn & Daugstad 2001;Löffler et al 2004). Therefore, changes in land use should be able to trigger reactions in the tree line position which could easily be misinterpreted as climatedriven reactions (Davis et al 1998;Hofgaard 1997;Holtmeier & Broll 2005;Bryn 2008;Bryn et al 2013).…”

“…5). This basically land use-driven process is evident both in the Scandes, where mountain birch quickly colonizes abandoned alpine pasture fields (Bryn 2008, Bryn & Hemsing 2012, Bryn et al 2013) (Fig. 6), and in more southern European mountains (Dirnböck et al 2003, Gehrig-Fasel et al 2007, Sitko & Troll 2008, where e.g.…”
