A high-resolution summary of Cambrian to Early Triassic marine invertebrate biodiversity

Abstract: One great challenge in understanding the history of life is resolving the influence of environmental change on biodiversity. Simulated annealing and genetic algorithms were used to synthesize data from 11,000 marine fossil species, collected from more than 3000 stratigraphic sections, to generate a new Cambrian to Triassic biodiversity curve with an imputed temporal resolution of 26 ± 14.9 thousand years. This increased resolution clarifies the timing of known diversification and extinction events. Comparative… Show more

“…These positive carbon isotope excursions are also synchronous with periods of evolutionary crisis and extinction during the GOBE (Figure 12; Wang et al, 1993;Saltzman et al, 1995;Buggisch et al, 2003;Saltzman, 2005;Elrick et al, 2011;Kröger et al, 2019;Fan et al, 2020), implying a connection between changes in upwelling dynamics and biodiversity. The GOBE is characterized by major structural changes to marine ecosystems (Algeo et al, 2016).…”

“…No stomach content is available but small thin-shelled bivalves, together with bivalved-arthropods (Thylacocephala) and small ammonoids, occur abundantly in the strata that yielded the holotype of the species 18 . Also, the first diversification peak of invertebrates, especially bivalves, after the end-Permian mass extinction was recorded in Chinese strata coinciding with the occurrence of C. lenticarpus and other oldest ichthyosauromorphs 19,20 .…”

To date, FRF data have not been used in this way, although the database offers almost unparalleled opportunity for regional-scale, quantitative biostratigraphic studies of this sort (for a recent, global example of this sort of application, see Fan et al 2020).…”
