A High Signal–Noise Ratio UWB Radar for Buried Pipe Location Using Golay Complementary Sequences

Abstract: A Golay-based ultra wideband ground penetrating for underground pipes location is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Golay complementary codes with the code length of 1024 and frequency of 1 GHz are used as the probe signals. The two-dimensional image of the buried pipes is achieved by a correlation method and a back-projection algorithm. The experimental results show that both the plastic pipe and metallic pipe can be located with a range resolution of 10 cm. Furthermore, as the Golay complementary seq… Show more

“…Using a single transmitting and receiving antenna, SAR achieves high azimuth resolution. This attribute has proven beneficial for applications such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and various vehicular and airborne operations [106]- [109]. The principle underlying SAR can be mathematically described by the radar equation for SAR, which is:…”

“…The AM of signals also has a wide practical application for radar systems [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], as well as for communication systems [ 24 ], for example, when generating ultra-wideband signals modulated in amplitude by Barker codes or an M-sequence [ 20 , 21 , 23 ], including with different values of the levels of elementary pulses of codes [ 22 ].…”

“…Traditionally, certain approaches are used to modulate these signals [13,14] and, consequently, to achieve a high fidelity of signal detection in ambient noise. This is particularly relevant with a sequence of codes.…”
