A highly selective fluorescence and absorption sensor for rapid recognition and detection of Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution and film

Abstract: A fluorescence and absorption chemosensor (SAAT) based on 5‐(hydroxymethyl)‐salicylaldehyde (SA) and o‐aminothiophenol (AT) was designed and synthesized. SAAT in DMSO–HEPES (20.0 mM, v/v, 1:99, pH = 7.0) solution shows a highly selective and sensitive absorption and an ‘on–off’ fluorescence response to Cu2+ ions in aqueous solutions over all other competitive metal ions including Na+, Ag+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Hg2+, K+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Sr2+, Tb3+ and Co2+. SAAT exhibits ratiometric absorption … Show more

“…Flash column chromatography was performed on Merck silica gel (230-400 mesh). NMR spectra were recorded on a Bruker Avance NEO spectrometer operating at 400 MHz, with a 5 mm probe for direct detection of 1 H, 13 C, 19 F, and 29 Si. The spectra were recorded at room temperature using the standard parameter sets provided by Bruker.…”

“…are well known for their ability to form complexes with metal ions. [14][15][16] Such complexes have been useful as catalysts for the oxidative coupling of phenols, 17 optical chemical sensors, 18 fluorescent chemosensors, 19,20 or anticancer agents. 21 The majority of the reactions in which salicylaldehydes are employed as starting materials have been performed mostly with the narrow, yet significant number of commercially available ortho-hydroxybenzaldehydes.…”

“…According to the World Health Organization and United States Environmental Protection Agency, the tolerable intake limit for Cu 2+ ions in the human body is 1.3 μg/ml [9, 10]. However, high concentrations of copper can result in serious illness due to damage to the liver and kidney [11] and may cause conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease [12], Wilson’s disease [13], Parkinson's disease [14], prions disease [15] and diabetes [16]. Other health threats, such as Indian childhood cirrhosis and idiopathic copper toxicosis, have been reported due to the overloading of copper in children [17].…”
