“…This is supported by the similar location of secretory granules in the luminal cytoplasm and in the lumen itself in electron micrographs of cat prostate. Aitken & Aughey (1964), showed a similar location of acid phosphatase, 5-nucleotidase and secretory protein and it is suggested that zinc is secreted by the cat prostatic cells as a metallo-enzyme. Repeated attempts to demonstrate zinc by histochemical methods in this species have invariably been inconclusive, indeterminate results contrasting sharply with the well-defined localization characteristic of autoradiographs.…”

“…carbonic anhydrase, non-specific acid and alkaline phosphatase, and 5-nucleotidase (Mann, 1964). Non-specific acid phosphatase and 5-nucleotidase are present in the secretory epithelium of the cat compact prostate in which, therefore, zinc is to be ex¬ pected (Aitken & Aughey, 1964;Filotto, 1965); moreover, chemical analysis of cat prostate (conducted in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Glasgow University Veterinary School) revealed a high concentration of zinc (7-7 to 8T mg Zn/g ash).…”

“…However, the reason remains unclear why the bulbourethral gland begins its activity and the vesicular gland does not. AITKEN (1960) assumes that the beginning of bulbourethral gland activity is more independent on testosterone.…”

“…In these studies preference was given to current techniques in order to obtain a simple and practical method for the differential diagnosis between hormonally treated and normal accessory genital glands. In the adult boar the morphology of the vesicular and the bulbourethral glands was investigated by means of different methods (BRESSOU/VLADUTIU, 1948;AITKEN, 1960;MEIERHOFER, 1977;NIELSEN et al, 1977;SINOWATZ et al, 1977 and1978; WROBEL, 1969 a and b). Some light microscopical and histochemical data of both glands in prepubertal boars were also published (THORBORG, 1948;AITKEN, 1960).…”

“…Measurement of epithelial heights was made using a calibrated eyepiece micrometer. Fifty observations were made on five sections and mean epithelial height determined for each of the glands according to Aire (1979). Microstereology of the glands was carried out utilizing a Merz compensating eyepiece graticule designed for microstereological measurements (Wild Heerbrugg Ltd).…”
