A Hybrid Adaptive Protocol for Reliable Data Delivery in WSNs with Multiple Mobile Sinks

Abstract: In this paper we deal with reliable and energy-efficient data delivery in sparse Wireless Sensor Networks with multiple Mobile Sinks (MSs). This is a critical task, especially when MSs move randomly, as interactions with sensor nodes are unpredictable, typically of short duration, and affected by message losses. In this paper we propose an adaptive data delivery protocol that combines efficiently erasure coding with an ARQ scheme. The key features of the proposed protocol are: (i) the use of redundancy to cope… Show more

“…In this paper, we are more interested in WSNs with MDCs. Several research works covering this subject are proposed in the review of literature on [7][8][9] In [7], the authors focus on the response delay sensitive applications, such as emergency preparedness and hostile environment surveillance, of WSNs. These applications pose challenging obstacles to the protocols for WSNs.…”

“…• MDCs as a Sink Node: this approach considers a MDC as a mobile sink in WSN, which is responsible for gathering sensed data using multi-hop communication [9]. In [10], the authors proposed a different approach that applies data collection in urban scenarios where people act as mobile sinks while gathering environmental data.…”

“…Some cross-layer MAC protocols have been developed to conserve energy by establishing reliable links and enforcing bandwidth constraints, but these protocols experience difficulties related to co-channel interference and long state transitions [57]. The end-to-end delay can be minimized by combining the MAC layer and the network layer.…”
