A Hybrid Beamforming Design for Massive MIMO LEO Satellite Communications

Abstract: 5G and future cellular networks intend to incorporate low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems (SatCom) to solve the coverage and availability problems that cannot be addressed by satellite-based or ground-based infrastructure alone. This integration of terrestrial and non terrestrial networks poses many technical challenges which need to be identified and addressed. To this aim, we design and simulate the downlink of a LEO SatCom compatible with 5G NR, with a special focus on the design of the be… Show more

“…In satellite communication systems, due to the limitation of the on-board radio-frequency (RF) chains caused by the confined device complexity and transmission power, hybrid analog and digital beamforming is a promising method to balance performances and hardware constraints. In [6], a hybrid beamforming strategy was used for massive multipleinput multiple-output LEO satellite communications. Later, the authors in [7] investigated hybrid beamforming method for reconfigurable intelligent surface-assisted secure integrated terrestrial-aerial networks.…”

“…In [8], an adaptive user scheduling method was proposed to mitigate intra-beam and inter-beam interference under the single-satellite scenario. Nevertheless, cooperation among multiple satellites was not taken into account in [6]- [8]. The authors in [9] proposed a multilevel clustering algorithm and a cross-cluster grouping algorithm to realize user scheduling, which considered the multi-satellite cooperation, but the user scheduling was only dependent on the positions of users.…”

“…In these works, the objective has been that of increasing the overall throughput in unicast or multicast systems, also addressing well-known issues for SatCom-based beamforming as scheduling and Channel State Information (CSI) retrieval. Finally, the design of hybrid beamforming for massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communications in LEO systems has been recently addressed in, [9]; here, the authors focus on a specific implementation of an on-board beamforming codebook compatible with 3GPP New Radio (NR). A thorough survey on MIMO techniques applied to SatCom is provided in [4], where both fixed and mobile satellite systems are examined and the major impairments related to the channel are identified.…”

“…1. Digital Beam Forming (DBF) is becoming quite demanded either for satellite or mobile communications, however, due to the numerous current issues of DBF [72], Hybrid Beam Formings (HBF) are the most widely used nowadays [77][78][79].…”

“…Through the usage of analog beamformers in the RF and digital beamformers in the baseband domains, hybrid beamfromings can be a good commitment bewteen complexity, power consumption and weight and size. This sort of beamformer is being widely used for mobile and satellite communications [77][78][79].…”
