A hybrid form of retinopathy of prematurity

Abstract: Some eyes with ROP may have abnormal neovascularisation resembling both APROP and classical staged ROP. It is difficult to characterise these eyes according to the international classification of ROP. However, the presence of plus disease should serve as guide to treatment.

“…All of them speculate the cause towards high amounts of supplemental oxygen. Some have even named them as ‘smouldering ROP’20 or ‘hybrid ROP.’21 In our study we could substantiate oxygen as the cause probably because of earlier screening, FFA documentation and mainly drop in the incidence of these cases when oxygen delivery was altered. The disease that was caused by oxygen as retrolental fibroplasia in 1950s is now being repeated again in these nations.…”

“…countries (Sanghi et al, 2010). Indeed the severe ROP seen in larger Indian infants may be a 'hybrid' of both typical AP-ROP and the classic ROP stages because it may also have a ridge at the junction of vascular and avascular retina (Sanghi et al, 2012). AP-ROP in India appears to have better outcomes from treatment if early screening, aggressive laser treatment followed by close follow-up and retreatment…”

“…In this case, the right eye showed the hybrid form of ROP demonstrating both ridge tissue (simulating staged ROP) and flat neovascularization simulating APROP in the same eye. 3 infants <1000 g should be screened within 20 after birth. This is a cardinal rule that was not followed by the referring NICU in this case.…”

“…2 The presence of a ridge with new vessels elsewhere (NVE) that had bled in the right eye qualified this as “hybrid” zone 1 disease [ Figure 1 ]. 3 Parents were exhaustively counseled and consent obtained for LP. The patient underwent LP the same day.…”
