Emerging efficiency standards indicates the demand of implementing highly efficient motors to reduce energy consumption and global warming, which is a worldwide concern. Owing to this, IE4 Efficiency line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (LSPMSM) contribution is increasing to a greater extent in the industrial motor market. This paper presents a new rotor configuration for a 2.2kW, 4 pole LSPMSM which is designed to meet efficiency beyond IE5 along with good power factor. The steady state and transient performance of the motor is optimized by using finite element analysis (FEA) software. From the results, it is evident that the proposed motor meets beyond IE5 efficiency level with 10% reduction in its length. Further reducing the length up to 30%, the motor sustains at IE4 efficiency level. To illustrate the optimum performance of the proposed design, the performance of the motor is benchmarked with identical radial type LSPMSM and commercially available IE2 induction motor. The FEA results of the proposed design are validated with the prototype development and testing. Consequently, this topology is both technically competent and cost effective, particularly for round the clock operation.
