A hybrid model of internal pitting corrosion degradation under changing operational conditions for pipeline integrity management

Abstract: This article proposes a new framework to estimate the degradation level in oil and gas pipelines corroded by internal pitting when operational conditions change over time. Despite the fact that the operational conditions of a pipeline change at various times, this change has not been addressed in the current available pipeline corrosion degradation models. In this framework, a hierarchical Bayesian method and augmented particle filtering are used for data fusion to address this issue. This framework is applied… Show more

“…This observation sounds reasonable considering the bi-class nature of our work while more complex structures have shown promising results for cases with more than five classes of objects. 30 Another point about the reported values in Table 6 is that accuracies are greater than average mean IoU values since misclassified pixels of each class are also considered in the denominator of IoU (equation (3)).…”

“…1,2 In the model-based group, physics-of-failure (PoF) models are used to estimate the damage size and RUL of structures subjected to degradation processes such as crack and corrosion. 3,4 However, PoF models can be complicated, are empirical in most cases, and can have limited applicability, particularly when the environmental and/or operational conditions are varied. 4 Limitations of model-based approaches are remedied to some extent by data-driven approaches where structure-specific condition monitoring data are used.…”

“…These techniques have been applied to a variety of reliability problems. [20][21][22][23][24][25] Therefore, considering x à as a piece of evidence (E) about an unknown quantity x, the belief about x can be updated via Bayes' theorem equation (1).…”

“…Pros and cons of different data-driven models to be used for pipeline corrosion are discussed elsewhere (Heidary, Gabriel, Modarres, Groth, & Vahdati, 2018), and they ranked based on their "appropriateness" and practicality. According to , Gamma process-based models (e.g., (Zhang & Zhou, 2014), (Heidary & Groth, 2020)) and Markov process-based models (e.g., (Valor et al, 2007;Caleyo, Vela´zquez, Hallen, Valor, & Esquivel-Amezcua, 2010)) are considered the best models to model the degradation of the pipeline due to pitting corrosion. An important advantage of the Markov process-based degradation models is that in conjunction with Markov decision processes, Markov process-based degradation models can be used for maintenance optimization to quantify both short-term and long-term risks/costs of a maintenance policy.…”
