A hydromorphic reevaluation of the forgotten river civilizations of Central Asia

Abstract: The Aral Sea basin in Central Asia and its major rivers, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, were the center of advanced river civilizations, and a principal hub of the Silk Roads over a period of more than 2,000 y. The region’s decline has been traditionally attributed to the devastating Mongol invasion of the early-13th century CE. However, the role of changing hydroclimatic conditions on the development of these culturally influential potamic societies has not been the subject of modern geoarchaeological investiga… Show more

“…The Shauldara massif is in the Turkestan region, southern Kazakhstan, on the Ortrar steppe, between the desert Turan Lowland and desert-steppe foothills of the western Thien Shan Mountains (Figure 1). With over 300,000 ha of irrigated land, this region is one of the oldest agricultural areas in Kazakhstan [17]. The main irrigated area is located between the Arys and Bougun tributaries of the Syr Darya river and belongs to one of the six main irrigation districts created during the Soviet era, called the Arys-Turkestan irrigation system ("Artur" district).…”

“…The hypothesis that river diversion could strictly be caused by human mediation (for benefit or by war) has however been challenged by Toonen et al (2020), and a climatic contribution has been highlighted (see climatic discussion below). In any case, in addition to diversions, dams create vulnerabilities not only to potential enemy attacks but also to natural hazards (such as earthquakes), which may cause sudden dam breaches.…”

Prospects are especially promising for path‐breaking interdisciplinary studies at the archaeology–history–palaeohydrology nexus, given the recent growth of environmental and global history studies (e.g.…”
