The ellipsocephalid trilobite Strenuaeva spinosa occurs widely in Scandinavia in the lower part of the Ornamentaspis? linnarssoni Zone (Cambrian Series 2). Its first appearance is a readily recognisable, widespread biohorizon in Scandinavia. During ontogeny, intergenal spines are lost and the librigenae develop from a generative zone in the genal region. The palpebro-ocular ridges are distinct and connected to the posterior part of the frontal glabellar lobe in the early meraspid period, but eye ridges become separate from the palpebral lobes and the glabella in the late meraspid period. S. spinosa is characterised by large genal spines, distinct axial spines and falcate pleural tips. The spines may have functioned in predation resistance. S. spinosa also has a small pointed projection at the anterolateral corners of some thoracic pleurae, the function of which is unknown. The presence of five furrows in the cephalic axial lobe of S. spinosa, best expressed in meraspides, suggests that the head of this ellipsocephalid trilobite was composed of six fused primary segments.

Bradoriid arthropods (class Bradoriida) are described for the first time from the lower-middle Cambrian boundary interval (regional Agdzian Stage) of the Franconian Forest in eastern Bavaria, Germany. The specimens originate from the Tannenknock and Triebenreuth formations, which are part of a shallow marine succession deposited at the margin of West Gondwana. Five different forms have been distinguished, Indiana aff. dermatoides (Walcott), Indiana sp., Indota? sp., Pseudobeyrichona monile sp. nov., and an undetermined svealutid, all of which belong to families that have previously been reported from and are typical of West Gondwana. However, at the generic level, all taxa are new for the region. Indiana is typical of shallow marine environments. So far it has been reported from Laurentia, Avalonia, and Baltica, and is considered to characterize the paleogeographic vicinity of Cambrian continents. Pseudobeyrichona has previously only been recorded from South China, and its new occurrence corroborates previous documentation of taxa from South China in northern West Gondwana. The presence of Indiana as a typical "western" taxon and Pseudobeyrichona among other typical "eastern taxa" confirms the unique biogeographical position of West Gondwana. The poorly known Indiana anderssoni (Wiman) and Indiana minima Wiman from the late early Cambrian of Scandinavia have been restudied in order to re-evaluate the two species and to refine the definition of Indiana. Indiana anderssoni represents a distinct species of Indiana, whereas I. minima is a pseudo-fossil.

Archaeostracans are an early fossil crustacean group linked to malacostracans. The earliest archaeostracans are late Cambrian, but the group diversified mostly in the Silurian and Devonian. Complete specimens are known from konservat-lagerstätten, but loose mandibular elements are relatively abundant in decalcified, acid resistant residues of middle Palaeozoic carbonates. These mandibular elements have been assumed to be originally heavily sclerotized and secondarily phosphatized, but have received little attention in the scientific literature. In the present study, we describe isolated mandibular elements, gnathal lobes (likely belonging to a single archaeostracan species), from the middle Palaeozoic of the Cordoba Province, Spain, and provide evidence that they were originally mineralized with calcium phosphate. Our results are in accordance with recent evidence that malacostracans use calcium phosphate to strengthen mechanically challenged areas of their cuticle, particularly the wear prone mandibular surfaces, and support the hypothesis of a dual calcium phosphate/carbonate mineralization system evolving early in arthropods.
