A major change on the snow warning in Portugal has been implemented in 2019 by the Portuguese meteorological service, resulting from a multidisciplinary approach using data and experience in Estrela mountain, in the centre of the country. Since then minor adjustments have been set and snow depth manual measurements have been gathered in five sites in Estrela mountain, at altitudes between 911 and 1993 m during four winter seasons, providing a better insight on the reality of snowfall and snow depth in the area. Additionally, since the end of 2020, a daily weather bulletin has been prepared and improved, and ultimately issued regularly, including tailored mountain point forecasts, such as hourly snowfall amounts, icy road conditions and snow storm conditions. This approach will be explained in detail, showing breakthroughs, such as a better understanding on the distribution, frequency and intensity of snow events. Finally, to further improve the knowledge of snowfall in Estrela mountain, possible activities are briefly explored and proposed, as enhancing instrumental monitoring, using less conventional data as webcams, crowdsource information and road salt, and exploring the relation of weather patterns with the vertical and horizontal distribution of snowfall.
