A Kerr magneto‐optical microscope using polaroid polarizers

Abstract: SYNOPSIS The Kerr‐effect microscope is of great utility in the static and dynamic investigation of magnetic domain patterns in thin films used for computer storage. An account is presented of the theoretical considerations which decide the optimum instrumental configuration for maximum contrast and this leads to two microscope designs: one using a single lens, and the other, two lenses. The type of domain shown by these microscopes is illustrated.
