A Korean Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study Investigating Risk Factors, Prevalence, and Characteristics of Sarcopenia in Men in Early Old Age

Jongseok Hwang,
Soonjee Park

Abstract: The present study investigated the risk factors, prevalence, and characteristics of sarcopenia among men aged 50–64 years. A total of 2868 participants were enrolled in this study. Of these, 328 individuals were classified into a sarcopenia group; the remaining 2540 were assigned to a control group. This study examined several variables, including skeletal muscle mass index, age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglyceride and total… Show more

“…Failure to diagnose the condition promptly can result in complications. However, the majority of studies on sarcopenia have primarily focused on individuals aged 65 years and older [12][13][14][15], even though age-related muscle loss can begin as early as the 50s [16][17][18][19][20]. It is crucial to identify the risk factors for muscle loss at an earlier stage to effectively prevent and treat this condition.…”

“…Timely identification of symptomatic individuals can significantly impact early diagnosis and intervention, as delays or missed diagnoses can lead to complications such as compromised functional recovery, diminished quality of life, and inefficient utilization of healthcare resources. However, it is noteworthy that the majority of sarcopenia research has primarily concentrated on individuals aged 40 years and older [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21], despite the fact that age-related muscle loss can initiate as early as the 30s [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. Hence, the identification of susceptibility markers for muscle loss at an earlier stage becomes imperative for effective prevention and treatment of this condition.…”
