A label-free detection of diethylstilbestrol based on molecularly imprinted polymer-coated upconversion nanoparticles obtained by surface grafting

Abstract: Herein, we report a novel fluorescent sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymer-coated upconversion nanoparticles (MIP-coated UCNPs) for the recognition and detection of diethylstilbestrol (DES). We used one-step process to modify the surface of the UCNPs with alkenyl groups, which was not only a simple process, but also greatly saved the preparation time. Then, a molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized on the UCNPs by the surface-graft molecular imprinting method. MIP-coated UCNPs combine the advant… Show more

“…However, they are of great interest due to their synthetic versatility and the large number of functional groups with which they can be functionalized [160]. This fact has been reflected in other nanocomposites in which the main core has been covered with silica in order to improve its properties or to allow a controlled polymerization [118]. This section shows some examples where SiO 2 is the fundamental core of nanocomposites (Table 9).…”

“…To measure the adsorption capacity of the two MMIPs, 0.05 g of MMIPs/MNIPs was added to 5 mL of 100 μg mL −1 DES in acetonitrile. The mixture was mechanically shaken for various times (1,3,5,7,9,10,11,13 min) at room temperature. After the MMIP/MNIP sorbent had separated under an external magnet, the supernatant was analyzed using HPLC.…”

“…Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a type of synthetic estrogen medication, is widely used as a growth stimulant in animal husbandry and in the treatment of pregnancy complications. 1 DES, which can be bio-accumulated in the human body through the food chain, can interfere with the synthesis and release of normal secretions, and activate or inhibit the function of the endocrine system, resulting in disorder of metabolism regulation. 2,3 Numerous methods have been developed for the detection of DES in foods, such as immunoassay, 4 electrochemistry, [5][6][7][8][9] gas chromatography, 10 high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 11 gas chromatography-mass spectrometry 12 and HPLC-mass spectrometry.…”

“…As it was shown, NP-labelled antibodies in combination with ICP-MS used in dot-blot analysis are providing 4 orders of magnitude improved detection limits compared to standard metal-based labelling approach 31 . The idea of MIP-based technology has been employed in combination with nanoparticles (NPs) made of Fe 3 O 4 32,33 , gold NPs 34 , CuO NPs 35 , EuS NPs 36 , quantum dots 3744 and upconversion NPs 45,46 .…”
