A Large-Scale Study of MT1–MMP as a Marker for Isolated Tumor Cells in Peripheral Blood and Bone Marrow in Gastric Cancer Cases

Abstract: The expression of MT1-MMP in peripheral blood from gastric cancer cases was a powerful indicator of distant metastasis especially for peritoneal dissemination. The presence of MT1-MMP-expressing cells in bone marrow indicated higher risk for distant metastasis in gastric cancer cases.

“…MMPs are usually relatively inactive, and can be activated when tissues are undergoing repair or remodeling, or in disease or inflammation (9). It has been reported that repressing the expression of certain MMPs is associated with increased survival and favorable prognosis in GC patients (10)(11)(12). MMPs can be specifically regulated by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs).…”

“…The level of MMP7 in peritoneal lavage was detected using RT-PCR and the results demonstrated that MMP7 expression is associated with peritoneal metastasis, for which the sensitivity was 53.3% (40). In addition, the expression of MMP14, as detected using RT-PCR of peripheral blood and bone marrow samples, is associated with peritoneal dissemination in gastric cancer (41). MMPs are suppressed by tissue inhibitor metalloproteinases (TIMPs) (42).…”

“…MT1-MMP-positive expression in peripheral blood was associated with incidence of peritoneal dissemination, lymphatic permeation, vascular permeation, and lymphonode metastasis. MT1-MMP-positive expression in bone marrow was also significantly related to the incidence of distant metastasis and peritoneal dissemination (Mimori et al, 2008). MT1-MMP plays an important role in the progression of the laryngeal cancer, and may serve as a reliable marker in estimating invasive and metastatic potency of laryngeal cancer (Sun and Li, 2004).…”
