A Late Ordovician age for the Whirlpool and Power Glen formations, New York

Abstract: A restudy of the palynology of the Whirlpool Formation and Power Glen Formation in New York (USA) yielded a diverse fossil assemblage with cryptospores, glomalean fungi, acritarchs, chitinozoans, scolecodonts, and small carbonaceous fossils. “…Eurypterids first appeared in the basin during the Late Ordovician, where they were found within siliciclastic facies in open marine environments (Caster and Kjellesvig-Waering 1964; Tollerton 2004). In the latest Ordovician–earliest Silurian, represented by the Whirlpool Formation, of western New York/southwestern Ontario (Schröer et al 2016), eurypterids began to appear in more nearshore settings with variable salinities (Tetreault et al 1994).
