A Late Pleistocene sequence at Seitevare, Swedish Lapland

Abstract: A peat layer beneath two till beds was found at Seitevare in Swedish Lapland. The pollen flora layer indicatesdeposition duringthe later part of the Eemian Interglacial. Thevegetation consisted of open forests predominated by pine and birch, mixed with alder and spruce. The sedimentation took place in a small oligotrophic-dystrophicwaterbasinwithapHabout5,accordingtothediatomflora. Inanadjacentsection, silty sediments with pollen indicating interstadial vegetation (birches, herbs) are covered by one till bed. … Show more

“…within the fjords, whereas during the next stadial MIS-5b the ice approached the outer coast (Baumann et al 1995;Sejrup et al 2000;Mangerud 1981Mangerud , 2004. The published interpretation of the evidence from northern Sweden (Lagerbäck & Robertsson 1988;Robertsson & Rodhe 1988;Lundqvist 1992Lundqvist , 2004Robertsson et al 1997), Finnmark (Olsen 1988;Olsen et al 1996) andnorthern Finland (Hütt et al 1993;Helmens et al 2000), however, has not always been consistent across the three regions. There is agreement that there have been three main glacial events since the Eemian and the question has been whether these correspond to the two Early Weichselian glacials MIS-5d and 5b and to a prolonged glacial period from MIS-4 to MIS-2 or whether there has been a period of limited ice cover during MIS-3.…”

“…The distance to other well-dated interglacial sites is great, but since the first investigations of the Leveiiniemi deposits nearly 30 years ago, several new sites in northern Fennoscandia, especially Finnish Lapland, have been described (Hirvas et nl. 1981;Hirvas 1983;Robertsson & Rodhe 1988;Olsen 1989;Forsstrom 1990;Hirvas 1991;Robertsson 1991 ;Aalto rt ul. 1992).…”
