A latent profile analysis of first-year university students’ academic expectations

Abstract: Academic expectations are an important variable in the explanation of adaptation and academic success in higher education. This paper uses latent profile analysis as a person-centered statistical approach to classify students into groups of similar types of expectations for higher education, at the beginning of the first year in university. Participants were 2,478 first-year Portuguese students. Based on the scores of seven dimensions of expectations, we identified six classes of students. Most students (84%) … Show more

“…Considering that previous national studies used the same scale (i.e., VAA-R) and also recruited samples of Spanish students in the 3rd to 6th grades of primary education [31,32], the lack of consensus among the results could be due to the fact that the LPA technique has been used for the first time in this study. In this sense, "unlike traditional cluster analysis, latent profile analysis is a model-based method that fits a statistical model to the data, classifying each case (person) in the most probable group (i.e., latent class) based on responses to a set of observed variables" [45] (p. 61). LPA is considered the most appropriate method as it incorporates features that overcome limitations of traditional methods [46].…”

“…Emerging adults, especially those who enrol in higher education, are financially dependent on their families and not constrained by adult life responsibilities, such as full-time employment, household bills, marriage, and raising children. However, their transition into adulthood is lived in parallel with stress related to their adaptation as higher education students, despite the very high expectations for such an experience (Araújo et al, 2019; Credé & Niehorster, 2012; Páramo-Fernández et al, 2017). In Southern European countries, such as Italy, Portugal, and Spain, emerging adults and traditional higher education students develop their autonomy in the context of strong family loyalties and patterns of co-residence with older family members, resulting in closer intergenerational ties.…”

“…These negative feelings can explain low investment of students in academic activities, therefore, fewer disciplines approved and lower results in the curricular units. [1,15].…”

“…The transition to Higher Education is experienced by young people with a mix of excitement and anxiety facing new developments and challenges [1,2]. University represents a rich time for growth and the preparation of young people to access the labor market and enter adult life.…”
