Indonesian Learners’ Self-Directed Learning in Online EAP Classes: Its Manifestations and Factors

The present study was conducted to investigate online English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes’ learners’ manifestations of the level of their Self-directed Learning (SDL) in English as well as their views about possible factors influencing their SDL. The study used interviews as the method of data collection. Six EAP learner participants at the university level participated in the study. Through Thematic Analysis of the interview transcripts, the present study found that learners with a high SDL (HSDL) adhered to a carefully planned learning agenda and were eager to learn more. In comparison, learners with a low SDL (LSDL) reported having no deliberate planning for learning and making no or little effort to learn English independently outside English class. The present study further found that perceived relevance of English class increased learners' SDL, and its lack of relevance reduced it. The study also found that LSDL learners' sense of achievement and teachers' support could increase their interest in learning, and so their SDL. Based on the findings, it was suggested that EAP courses increase their relevance to learners' needs and teachers provide the necessary support for LSDL learners to make them more interested in learning and increase their SDL.

This research aims to identify positive psychology through ESP learning in science classes at senior high schools in Indonesia. This study used qualitative method. The data collection method employed interviews and observations to obtain more detailed information regarding the research findings. Three distinct data collection methods involved observation, interview, and questionnaire. The qualitative data analysis method was from data summarization, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Research instruments used triangulation, which involved interviews, observations, and documentation. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that positive psychology serves as a connection or link between humanism and transpersonal. The concept of developing personality potential is evident in Positive Psychology, which also incorporates transcendence as one of its virtues, particularly in relation to spirituality and meaningfulness. The ESP learning concept can enable students to actively participate in foreign language teaching practices in the natural science learning process.

Extrinsic Motivation Influencing Vocational Students’ English Achievement on Hunting Bule Before and During Pandemic

Motivation drives learners to achieve their goals of learning including vocational students with work-oriented study. External pressures, expectation or rewards pose different challenge when it comes to pandemic situation. This study fills gap by examining vocational students’ elements of extrinsic motivation before and during Covid-19 strike to accomplish final task to interview English natives and their effects on final achievement. Respondents were vocational students (n=75) participated in English class for two semesters in a row (before and during pandemic). Students’ motivations on doing “Hunting Bule” before (x1) and during (x2) pandemic were measured. Data were later analyzed using variance and interpretation. External motivation before and during pandemic are proven to give contribution to the final score. However, some factors in one variable seemed to outperform the other in vice versa. Technology using is considered both motivational and demotivational for students during the pandemic, yet is good to accelerate education industry 4.0.
