“…The writer clearly demonstrates wide, if not thorough, knowledge of this socio-historical context in view of his seven newspaper articles on migrant farm workers written for The San Francisco News, which first came out as a collection in the 1938 pamphlet Their Blood Is Strong and were later published under the title The Harvest Gypsies in 1988. In the sixth article, he relates the importation of Chinese labour to build the transcontinental railroads and inveighs against racism and injustice, calling the treatment of foreign labour 'a disgraceful picture of greed and cruelty' (Steinbeck, 2019(Steinbeck, [1988: 4408).
