A light calibration system for the ProtoDUNE-DP detector

Abstract: A: A LED-based fiber calibration system for the ProtoDUNE-Dual Phase (DP) photon detection system (PDS) has been designed and validated. ProtoDUNE-DP is a 6x6x6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LAr TPC) currently being installed at the Neutrino Platform at CERN. The PDS is based on 36 8-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and will allow triggering on cosmic rays. The system serves as prototype for the PDS of the final DUNE DP far detector in which the PDS also has the function to allow the 3D event reco… Show more

“…CIEMAT, together with IFAE, has been responsible for the photon detection system of ProtoDUNE-DP, including the acquisition and characterization of 40 8" cryogenic photomultipliers [54], coating with wavelength shifters, design and production of the voltage circuit and HV splitters, production of the associated mechanics [55], light calibration system [56], readout and data acquisition systems [57], and final installation and commissioning of the light detection system in the detector. Figure 15 shows the ProtoDUNE-DP PMTs installed at the bottom of the ProtoDUNE-DP cryostat.…”

“…The calibration black box is the core of the LCS providing the control of the light source for the PMT calibration [13]. The black box operation and communication are controlled by a BeagleBone Black 7 board, an open-hardware mini computer that runs an embedded Debian Linux distribution.…”

“…A light calibration system (LCS) has been developed for ProtoDUNE-DP to monitor the PMT performance and obtain an equalized PMT response [13]. In the light calibration system, the light source is provided inside a black box by blue LEDs of 465 nm using Kapustinsky circuits [14] as LED driver, and transmitted by a fiber system ending with a fiber pointing at each PMT.…”

“…As wavelength shifter, a sheet of polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) is placed on top of 30 PMTs and the other 6 PMTs have tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) directly coated on them. There is a LED-based fiber calibration system to monitor the PMT performance and obtain an equalized PMT response [8].…”
