The distribution of the tetraploid taxon, Dryopteris spinulosa (O. F. Mull.) Watt (Dryopteris carthusiana (Villars) H. P. Fuchs) in western North America is delineated. The common and abundant diploid taoxn in the West is considered to be Dryopteris assimilis S. Walker, not Dryopteris austriaca (Jacq.) Woynar which is a tetraploid taxon of Europe. Dryopteris intermedia (Muhl.) A. Gray, although reported as being present in Montana and Idaho is not proven to be present.
