Since the worldwide Internet of Things (IoT) in smart cities is becoming increasingly popular among consumers and the business community, network traffic management is a crucial issue for optimizing the IoT ’s performance in smart cities. Multiple controllers on a immense scale implement in Software Defined Networks (SDN) in integration with Internet of Things (IoT) as an emerging paradigm enhances the scalability, security, privacy, and flexibility of the centralized control plane for smart city applications. The distributed multiple controller implementation model in SDN-IoT cannot conform to the dramatic developments in network traffic which results in a load disparity between controllers, leading to higher packet drop rate, high response time, and other problems with network performance deterioration. This paper lays the foundation on the multiple distributed controller load balancing (MDCLB) algorithm on an immense-scale SDN-IoT for smart cities. A smart city is a residential street that uses information and communication technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve its citizens’ quality of living. Researchers then propose the algorithm on the unbalancing of the load using the multiple controllers based on the parameter CPU Utilization in centralized control plane. The experimental results analysis is performed on the emulator named as mininet and validated the results in ryu controller over dynamic load balancing based on Nash bargaining, efficient switch migration load balancing algorithm, efficiency aware load balancing algorithm, and proposed algorithm (MDCLB) algorithm are executed and analyzed based on the parameter CPU Utilization which ensures that the Utilization of CPU with load balancing is 20% better than the Utilization of CPU without load balancing.

The wide proliferation of telecommunication technologies in the last decade gives rise to the number of more sophisticated security threats. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a new networking architecture that isolates the network control plane from the data plane that incidentally provides better features and functionalities to detect and deal with those security threats. Its elastic programmable feature permits efficient network management and provides network operators with the flexibility to monitor and fine-tune their network. However, the new technology also created many new security concerns, and the threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is one of the major concerns. This paper presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art techniques to detect DDoS attacks on SDN controller. It first describes the SDN technology and then elaborates on the mechanism of DDoS attacks on SDN. Additionally, this paper also describes all major DDoS detection techniques and classifies them at a very high level according to the techniques or methods used. The current survey is qualitatively compared with the existing surveys using various author-defined metrics. Finally, this paper provides a guideline for future research related to detection techniques of DDoS against the SDN controller.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) brings flexibility in the construction and managment of distributed applications by reducing the constraints imposed by physical networks and by moving the control of networks closer to the applications. However mastering SDN still poses numerous challenges among which the design of correct SDN components (more specifically controller and switches). In this work we use a formal stepwise approach to model and reason on SDN. Although formal approaches have already been used in this area, this contribution is the first state-based approach; it is based on the Event-B formal method, and it enables a correct-by-construction of SDN components. We provide the steps to build, using several refinements, a global formal model of a SDN system; correct SDN components are then systematically built from the global formal model satisfying the desired properties. Event-B is used to experiment the approach.
