A living laboratory for the design and evaluation of ubiquitous computing technologies

Abstract: We introduce the PlaceLab, a new "living laboratory" for the study of ubiquitous technologies in home settings. The PlaceLab is a tool for researchers developing context-aware and ubiquitous interaction technologies. It complements more traditional data gathering instruments and methods, such as home ethnography and laboratory studies. We describe the data collection capabilities of the laboratory and current examples of its use.

“…Given that humans will move around the apartment frequently and according to somewhat predictable but highly variable behaviour patterns [53][54], it is necessary to incorporate this variability into our analysis, especially given the strong impact it has on actual light exposure. As a first approximation, we decided to adopt the simplest behavioural model, i.e.…”

“…More studies are needed that examine what people do with their current tools and devices in their surrounding environments. In addition, more studies are needed of UbiComp technologies being used in situ or the wild -to help illuminate how people can construct, appropriate and use them [e.g., 16,22,23,29].…”

“…The term 'Living Lab' was originally used to describe a research facility that tries to overcome the artificial lab-context by providing a laboratory with all facilities of a regular home, optimized for multi-day or multi-week observational studies of individuals and constructed to resemble a 'real' home as closely as possible (Intille et al, 2005). In Europe this original notion of Living Labs was reinterpreted based on the advances in both open and user innovation, and the movement was given a head start by the support of EU-policy, especially in the domain of ICTs (Dutilleul et al, 2011).…”
