A Longitudinal Study of the Family Physical Activity Environment and Physical Activity among Youth

Abstract: Longitudinal relationships, although weak in magnitude, were observed between the family environment and MVPA among youth. Interventions promoting maternal role modeling, paternal reinforcement of and support for PA, and maternal and sibling coparticipation in PA with youth are warranted.

“…19,48 Moreover, other household members should be considered, as having older siblings has been shown to be associated with children's MVPA in this cohort, 50 and both maternal and sibling co-participation may be associated with a positive change in girls' activity. 51 Given that both parents being active may have a greater effect on their child's activity than the sum of their individual parts, 19 active siblings may further encourage activity in young children. Health promotion efforts targeting physical activity in young children may therefore consider the inclusion of whole families.…”

“…One potential moderator of these associations is the extent to which families 'co-participate' 16 in these behaviours. Parental co-participation refers to parental accompaniment during activities, such as walking or cycling, or other forms of PA 16 . Parents' accompaniment of their child during walking or cycling may mitigate the impact of environmental attributes by increasing children's traffic and cycling skills and teaching children safe routes.…”

“…Taking part in sports with other family members plays a significant role in the promotion of physical activity among children and adolescents (Brooks, Smeeton, Chester, Spencer, & Klemera, 2014;Cleland et al, 2011), and can also be treated as an element of modelling and/or support (Dunton et al, 2013). Joint participation in physical activities (joint pursuit of sports, walks, active games with parents) constitutes an exemplary model to be followed, demonstrating the parents' positive attitudes to physical activity, teaching positive behaviours and promoting the formation of the habit of staying active, as well as the need to stay active.…”
