“…It was the first report of NDV outbreaks by genotype V viruses in the Far East. Sublineage Vb was largely composed of Italian and Eastern Europe isolates between 1977 and 2002, as reported by previous studies (Herczeg et al, 2001;Czeglédi et al, 2002;Wehmann et al, 2003b). Like a previous study (Aldous et al, 2003), cormorant isolates in the US and Canada in the 1990s (putative sublineage Vc) Figure 2.…”

“…Sequences of strain described in this study are in bold. Sequences of strains with normal letters were taken from the GenBank (accession numbers of the strains for which original designation was changed in this study are presented in Table 1; for other strains, see accession numbers in Herczeg et al, 2001;Wehmann et al, 2003a,b). The branch lengths represent the predicted number of substitutions and are proportional to the differences between the isolates.…”

“…The F gene of NDV is usually, although not exclusively, the focus of attention for universal PCRs, followed by analysis in a number of ways. Herczeg et al (2001) amplified an F gene fragment of 1.3 kb of 36 velogenic strains in Italy and analyzed it with three restriction enzymes, having previously established the existence of several genotypes by this approach (Ballagi-Pordány et al, 1996;Lomniczi et al, 1998;Herczeg et al 1999). Using this approach, and nucleotide sequencing, they were able to link Italian isolates with strains associated with enzootics in various other countries.…”

“…As with Herczeg et al (2001), the gene under scrutiny is the F gene. In these approaches, however, smaller PCR products were generated, although all contained the sequence of the connecting peptide.…”
